Tuca and Bertie - Season 2 Trailer
Tuca and Bertie are back on Adult Swim! Second season premieres June 13th, 11:30 PM (US)
My views on Tuca & Bertie
I was pretty excited to watch Tuca & Bertie, since I love Bojack Horseman! The style and aesthetic of both cartoons are the same, just as using humanized animals as characters. However, Tuca & Bertie have a more surrealistic vibe, with a lot of absurds and metalanguage (Like words that came out of a character’s mouth and then fell on the floor). In Bojack Horseman, since all animals are humanized, we never see nobody with pets, and they even created a messed up explanation for eating meat (Season 2, ep 5) - the absurd on Bojack Horseman has logic in its context. On Tuca & Bertie, they choose to make thinks more crazy and illogical with that classic cartoon nonsense where humanized dogs have pet dogs. Also, Tuca & Bertie not only humanized animals, but also plants and some lifeless objects, which complements the more cartoonish absurd vibe of it.
Besides the similarities, those shows have completely different types of stories. Tuca & Bertie is way less dark, and is a light and fun thing to watch. The story is nice, the characters are very likable and the voice acting is pretty good.
Generally, the show does not have a serious vibe, but they manage to discuss interesting topics through it. Things like maturity, friendship, work, sex, relationships (being them between friends, family, couples or work colleagues), adulthood, womanhood, anxiety, panic attacks, confidence issues (on yourself and others) and, generally, how life is, are pointed out in a more realistic way than expected.
The thing that most impressed me was that the show discussed things like sexism and sexual harassment/assault various times, pointing out not only situations where women feel uncomfortable, but also moments where we end up letting pass (or don’t even notice the problem in) inappropriate behaviors that are constantly present in a patriarchal society, from the smallest to the highest expressions of it. I really liked how they represented those issues, showing situations that, even when represented in a crazy reality, are very real to all women.
Plusss, loved the theme song and all of those tiny remixed songs that go through the show!
In resume, I really liked the show and would love to watch another season! It didn’t become one of my favorites, but I’d definitely recommend it to anyone!
See ya!
Guys. Tuca and Bertie got cancelled after only one season just as the artists and writers unionized.... coincidence?? NO.
I love big mouth but in comparison, it's strange only that got renewed and not Tuca and Bertie, a show about two women not boys and their perspective through young adult life. It's queer, it's colorful, the voice actors are poc. Netflix cancelling them is just wrong. They gave them a season to show they "care" then took it away for no reason. It actually did well with ratings!! Also the art team is the same from Bojack horseman.
